7th Annual Community Bird Census

Join us Friday, December 26, 2008

The goal of this informal bird census is to compile one community bird census list for that day, and to enjoy the beauty of the Island and some birding camaraderie with a nod towards the traditional bird census that Elizabeth Dickens shepherded on the Day after Christmas starting in 1924.

The structure and logistics of this year's census includes four parts. One is free to participate as much (or as little) as one would like.
  1. First we will meet at 9:00 A.M. at Settlers Rock where a spotting scope will be available for some early morning duck watching. Depending on personal preference folks may plan a day of bird walks on their own or team up with others.

  2. Next Kim will lead a short (1 hour) bird walk for anyone interested. The location will be announced while we are at Settler's Rock and will be determined based on weather and wind direction.

  3. During the middle of the day, participants will employ whatever means desirable to make a list of birds seen that day. The options for making these observations range from taking one or more walks, to watching your bird feeder from the warmth of your house.

  4. At 4 P.M. we will reassemble at the Block Island School to compile the list, enjoy some hot cider, revel in the stories of the day, and peruse the Elizabeth Dickens Bird Collection.
Anyone wishing to call in his or her Block Island observations may call Kim Gaffett at 466-2224.
